EDO KIRIKO & THE UK

Horiguchi Kiriko would like to celebrate the unique historic connection that the traditional craft of glassmaking forms between the UK and Japan, to rediscover the wonderful culture of British cut glass, and to provide opportunities for the revitalization of cut glass.

“First passed from the UK to Japan, the beauty of the craft polished in Japan returns to the UK once more”「英国から日本へ渡り、磨きあげられた技術と美しさを、また再び、英国へ」

Over the past few years, each time I have visited, the UK has become a special country for me. I hope to connect with many more people; my wish is that the people of the UK come to know Horiguchi kiriko and the Japanese art of cut glass, Edo kiriko. That this craft, first introduced to Japan by the UK, may return home to the UK again in its new form.
I want to pass this craft on for future generations.
And at this age, I have found a new dream: to teach Edo kiriko in the UK.
To breathe new life into British cut glass.

CUT GLASS ROOTS

Edo kiriko is the Japanese art of cut glass which originated from the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo). It is said to have first appeared about two hundred years ago, when Kyubei Kagaya, who ran a glassware shop in the Nihonbashi area, began to engrave glass. The ingenious cutting techniques he created were further developed and refined under the tutelage of British cut-glass engineer Emanuel Hauptmann, who was invited to Japan a few decades later to train artisans in the latest cutting technology.

The Edo kiriko of today is a fusion of the techniques of British glass cutters with the Japanese aesthetic sense. The beauty of Edo kiriko remains highly valued. It has been registered as a National Traditional Craft since 2002.

However, in the UK, cut glass factories have closed one after another, and glassmakers are losing their livelihoods. We hope to breathe new life into cut glass in the UK. Through workshops at universities and UK market development, we aim to exchange ideas with those who are interested in cut glass and would like to revitalise the craft.

How do we define British cut glass? How do we define Edo kiriko?

While honouring our heritage, we can create new traditions. It is possible to reinvigorate a craft that has fallen into relative disuse.
